Internship Mollab – Traits in onion

This internship project aims to improve the molecular detection of certain traits in onion (Allium cepa) breeding lines.

Within the R&D department of Takii Europe, the molecular genetics laboratory is responsible for the genetic analysis of all crops bred in Europe. Their primary task is to confirm the presence of specific traits in the progeny of breeding lines through genetic markers. The main crops that are analyzed in the laboratory are tomato, melon, cabbage, and onion.

What you will do:

• Performing a literature study on the trait of interest;
• Utilize existing molecular markers to identify the trait in Takii material;
• Improve the molecular markers for higher accuracy in identification of the trait of interest;
• Additionally, you will participate in the routine marker analysis.

Requirements:

• A fourth-year HBO student with a HLO or HAS background;
• You are solution-oriented, enthusiastic and dare to show initiative;
• Knowledge and interest in molecular plant genetics;
• Experience with data visualization via Excel and R-studio is a plus;
• Good command of the Dutch and/or English language;
• You can work well together as well as independently.
